Chapter 6

Kami had just left Gabby at the communal breakfast table. She’d handed the giggling child over to a young volunteer who adored her. The volunteer would be helping Gabby cut up her pancakes, the little girl’s favorite food.

She still had a smile on her face from watching Gabby’s excitement. She wished Tye had been able to witness all the cuteness. There were times she felt bad that he wasn’t allowed to spend time with his niece or even let Gabby know that he was family. But telling Gabby right now might cause unforeseen complications so it would be wiser to wait for Dani to get Gabby back before telling the child about her uncle and grandmother.

Her musings ended with the ringing of the telephone. Since it was the one on her desk rather than her cell, she assumed it was a business call and answered with the formal greeting.

“Good morning. This is the Ridgeway Children’s Center where children get a future. How may I help you?”

“Kami? It’s me, Tye.”

“Oh, hi.” She chuckled. “This is a first. You always call my cell. Is this business? Did you need to speak with Margo?”

She heard a sigh coming from the phone and a quiet curse that wasn’t meant for her ears. She waited patiently for the answer.

Eventually, Tye replied, “I don’t know whether to count it as business or not. I almost feel like I’m ratting out my sister to the authorities. Can I speak to you as a friend instead of Gabby’s caseworker?”

“Oh.” Kami bit her lip. “Um, I guess so. For now, anyway. I have to warn you, though. If what you have to say can cause Gabby harm in any way then my offer is null and void. Please, don’t tell me Dani is planning to take Gabby again. This time, I won’t lie for her or you.”

“I respect that and agree with it. But Dani isn’t taking Gabby anytime soon,” Tye began. “I got a call from her boyfriend as soon as I left you yesterday. Dani fell off the wagon. She passed out in her boyfriend’s apartment and I had to get her.”

“Damn it! She wanted to be with Gabby so badly. I thought she might make it this time,” Kami confided. “I’m sorry, Tye. At least you found her. It could’ve been so much worse if you hadn’t.”

“That’s true. His boyfriend is a creep and I wouldn’t put it past him to hurt Dani in ways other than giving her drugs. I told him to stay away from my sister.”

Though he couldn’t see her, she nodded approvingly. “I’m glad you did, but if I were you, I probably would’ve punched him in the nose and kicked his balls for good measure.”

That earned her a laugh.

“I thought about it. He just wasn’t worth the effort. I did call the cops and reported that there was a drug issue at that address. They’ll be watching his sorry ass and he’ll eventually screw himself over. I only wish I could be there to watch.
